Lampe, Alfred

 

Born May 14, 1900, in Warsaw; died Dec. 10, 1943, in Moscow. Prominent member of the Polish labor movement and publicist.

The son of an artisan, Lampe joined the Communist Party of Poland (CPP) in 1921 and was elected to its Central Committee in 1926. In 1922 he helped organize the Communist Youth League of Poland. He was elected to the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CPP in 1929 and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Trade Union International from 1930 to 1933. He spent ten years in the prisons of bourgeois and landlord Poland.

After September 1939, Lampe lived in the USSR, helping to organize the Union of Polish Patriots and the Polish Army in 1943. He became editor of the magazine Nowe widnokręgi in 1942 and of the newspaper Wolna Polska in 1943. Lampe was posthumously awarded the Grunwald Cross First Class in 1945. In 1964 his remains were transferred from Moscow to Warsaw.
