Oertel, Johannes

Oertel, Johannes (Adam Simon)

(1823–1909) painter; born in Fürth, Bavaria. He emigrated to Newark, N.J. (1848), worked as an engraver of banknotes (1852–57), became an Episcopalian deacon (1867), and served in many parishes. Moving frequently, he produced wood carvings and a series of four religious paintings, called the Redemption series (c. 1867–1902).
