Moscow Mining Institute

one of the most important educational and scientific centers in the USSR for the mining industry.

In 1918, on the initiative of V. I. Lenin, the Moscow Academy of Mines was organized. The present institute was established in 1930 on the basis of the mining department of the academy. Among those whose careers are associated with the institute or the mining department of the academy are I. M. Gubkin, A. A. Skochinskii, A. M. Terpigorev, L. D. Sheviakov, M. M. Fedorov, A. D. Arkhangel’skii, A. S. Il’ichev, A. O. Spivakovskii, and V. V. Rzhevskii.

In 1973 the institute had departments of working of coal deposits and underground construction, working of ore and nonmetalliferous deposits, physical engineering, mining mechanics, electrification and automation, evening and correspondence study, and advanced training of instructors. It also had a preparatory division, a graduate school, 39 subdepartments, three special problem laboratories, and 11 sectorial laboratories. The library has about 700, 000 volumes. During the 1972–73 academic year, the institute trained about 6, 000 students, and the teaching staff numbered 450, including 65 professors and doctors of sciences and about 250 lecturers and candidates of sciences. The institute confers doctoral and candidate’s degrees. It publishes collections of scientific works. The Soviet statesmen G. T. Strokov, I. F. Tevosian, A. P. Zaveniagin, A. V. Topchiev, B. F. Bratchenko, D. G. Onika, A. A. Shilin, and L. E. Grafov and the writer A. A. Fadeev studied at the institute (or the mining department of the Moscow Academy of Mines). Since its founding, the institute has trained about 17, 000 specialists. It was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1969.
