Moscow Institute of Aviation

(full name, Sergo Ordzhonikidze Moscow Institute of Aviation), one of the largest educational and scientific institutions in the USSR for aircraft construction. Founded in 1930. In 1935 the name “Sergo Ordzhonikidze” was added to the title. The careers of such aircraft designers and scientists as A. N. Tupolev, N. N. Polikarpov, A. S. Iakovlev, V. M. Miasishchev, M. L. Mil’, P. D. Grushin, B. S. Stechkin, S. K. Tumanskii, S. M. Liul’ka, B. N. Iur’ev, I. I. Artobolevskii, M. D. Millionshchikov, B. N. Petrov, N. V. Inozemtsev, I. V. Ostoslavskii, and A. V. Kvasnikov are associated with the institute.

As of 1973 the institute had departments of airplane and helicopter design, aircraft and spacecraft, aviation engines, aviation automatic control systems, radio electronics, organization and economics of aircraft manufacture, aircraft equipment, and applied mathematics; eight evening departments; preparatory divisions; a department for advanced training of teachers in technical higher educational institutions and of specialists in the aviation industry; a graduate school; 72 subdepartments; a sector for scientific research work; eight special problem laboratories; and 16 sectorial laboratories. The library contains 1.7 million volumes. During the 1972–73 academic year more than 23, 000 students were studying at the institute. The teaching staff numbered about 1, 600 including eight academicians and corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, 150 professors and doctors of sciences, and 750 docents and candidates of sciences. The institute confers candidate’s and doctoral degrees. It has published Trudy (Transactions) since 1935. Since its founding the institute has trained more than 50, 000 specialists. It has been awarded the Order of Lenin (1945).
