periodical publications on questions of general, specific, and applied linguistics. Linguistic journals were first published in the middle of the 19th century.

The principal linguistic journals in Russia (second half of the 19th century to the early 20th century) dealt mainly with Russian and Slavic linguistics and the philological study of historical texts. The principal Russian linguistic publications were Izvestiia imperatorskoi Akademii nauk po Otdeleniiu russkogo iazyka i slovesnosti (1852–63), Filologicheskie zapiski (1860–1917), Rus-skii filologicheskii vestnik (1879–1918), and Izvestiia Otdeleniia russkogo iazyka i slovesnosti Akademii nauk (1896–1927).

In the USSR, the following general linguistic journals are published: Movoznavstvo (Kiev, 1934—), Izvestiia Akademii nauk SSSR: Seriia literatury i iazyka (1940—), Voprosy iazykoz-naniia (1952—), and Nauchnye doklady vysshei shkoly: Filologicheskie nauki (1958—); the general-readership publication Russkaia rech’ (1967—); and linguistic journals on separate language groups, such as Pytannia slov’ians’koho movoznavstva (L’vov, 1948—), Sovetskoe slavianovedenie (1965—), Sovetskoe finno-ugrovedenie (Tallinn, 1965—), and Sovetskaia tiurkologiia (Baku, 1970—). In the Union republics, the following journals are published: Uzbek tili vä ädäbiyati (Tashkent, 1958—), Limba shi literatura moldoveniaske (Kishinev, 1958—), Keel ja kirjandus (Tallinn, 1958—), and Izvestiia Akademii nauk Azerbaidzhanskoi SSR: Seriia Iazykoznanie, literatura i iskusstvo (Baku, 1966—). Linguistic journals devoted primarily to language teaching include Russkii iazyk v shkole (1936 —), Russkii iazyk v natsional’noi shkole (1957—), Russkii iazyk za rubezhom (1967—), and Inostrannye iazyki v shkole (1948; from 1934 to 1941, Inostrannyi iazyk v shkole). Materials on applied linguistics are published in the journal Nauchno-tekhnicheskaia informatsiia: Seriia 2 (1967—). The nonperiodical linguistic collections Mashinnyi perevod i prikladnaia lingvistika (1959—) and Etimolo-giia (1963—) appear on a regular basis.

In the socialist countries, the most general publications on linguistics include: Czechoslovakia— Slovo a slovesnost (Prague, 1935—) and Jazykovedn ý časopis (Bratislava, 1946—); German Democratic Republic— Zeitschrift fur Phonetik, Sprachwissen-schaft und Kommunikationsforschung (Berlin, 1947—); Hungary—Nyelvtudományi Közlemények (Budapest, 1862—) and Acta linguistica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae (Budapest, 1951—); Poland— Lingua posnaniensis (Poznań, 1949—) and Poradnik językowy (Warsaw, 1901—); Rumania— Revue roumaine de linguistique (Bucharest, 1956—) and Cercetări de linguistică (Cluj, 1956—). Linguistic journals published on individual languages include: Bulgarian— Bulgarski ezik (Sofia, 1951—); Chinese— Chungkuo yüwen (Peking, 1952—); Czech— Naŝe řeč (Prague, 1917—); Hungarian— Magyar Nyelv (Budapest, 1905—) and Magyar nyelvjárások (Budapest, 1951—); Macedonian— Makedonski jazik (Skopje, 1950—); Polish—Język polski (Kraków, 1916—); Rumanian—Limbă romînă (Bucharest, 1952—); Serbo-Croatian—Naŝjezik (Belgrade, 1932–41; new series, 1949—) and Jezik (Zagreb, 1952—); Slovak— Slovenská reč (Bratislava, 1932—); and Slovenian—Jezik; in slovstvo (Ljubljana, 1954—). Linguistic journals on Slavic studies are published in a number of socialist countries: Studia slavica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae (Budapest, 1955—), Zeitschrift für Slawistik (Berlin, 1956—), Slavia occidentalis (Poznań, 1921—), Slavia (Prague, 1922—), and Slavistična revija (Ljubljana, 1948—).

In other foreign countries, the following general linguistics journals are published: Austria— Die Sprache (Vienna, 1949—); Belgium— Orbis (Louvain, 1952—) and Le Langage et l’homme (Brussels, 1966—); Brazil— Estudos linguísticos (São Paulo-Rio de Janeiro, 1966—); Canada— The Canadian Journal of Linguistics (Toronto, 1954—); Denmark— Acta linguistica Hafniensia (Copenhagen, 1939—) and Travaux du Cercle linguistique de Copenhague (Copenhagen, 1944—); France— Revue de linguistique et de philologie comparée (Paris, 1867—1916), Bulletin de la Société de linguistique de Paris (Paris, 1869—), La Linguistique (Paris, 1965—), and Langages (Paris, 1966—); German Federal Republic—Zeitschrift für Dialektologie und Linguistik (Wiesbaden, 1924—) and Kratylos (Wiesbaden, 1956—); Great Britain— Modem Languages (London, 1919—), Archivum lin-guisticum (Glasgow, 1949—), Language and Speech (Teddington, 1958—), and Journal of Linguistics (London-New York, 1965—); India— Indian Linguistics (Calcutta, 1931—); Italy— Archivio glottologico italiano (Florence, 1873—) and Studi e saggi linguistici (Pisa, 1961—); Japan— Kokuritsu Kokugo kenkyujo nempo (Tokyo, 1951—); Netherlands— Lingua (Amsterdam, 1948—) and Foundations of Language (Dordrecht, 1965—); New Zealand— Te Reo (Wellington, 1958—; considerable material is devoted to the study of the languages of Oceania); Sweden— Studia linguistica (Lund, 1947—); Switzerland— Cahiers Ferdinand de Saussure (Geneva, 1941—); United States— International Journal of American Linguistics (New York-Baltimore, 1917—; considerable material deals with the study of American Indian languages), Language (Baltimore, 1925—), Studies in Linguistics (Norman, 1942—), Word (New York, 1945—), General Linguistics (Lexington, 1955—), Anthropological Linguistics (Bloomington, 1959—), Language Sciences (Bloomington, 1968—), and Linguistic Inquiry (Cambridge, 1970—; transformational and generative grammar). Most of these journals devote special attention to the language of the respective country and the corresponding language group. The journal Folia linguistica (The Hague, 1967—) is published by the European Linguistic Society (SLE).

Specialized linguistic journals on individual languages include: English— American Speech (New York, 1925—; also touches on general linguistic problems), Anglistica (Copenhagen, 1953—), and Journal of English Linguistics (Washington, 1967—); Finnish— Virittäjä (Helsinki, 1897—); French— Le Français moderne (Paris, 1933—) and Langue française (Paris, 1969—); German— Muttersprache (Mannheim, 1886—) and Zeitschrift für deutsche Sprache (Berlin, 1964—; Zeitschrift für deutsche Wortforschung was published in 1901–14 and 1960- 63); Hebrew— Leshonenu (Jerusalem, 1928—); Italian— Lingua nostra (Florence, 1939—); Japanese—Kokugogaku (Tokyo, 1948—); Sanskrit— Vak (Poona, 1951—); Spanish— Español actual (Madrid, 1964—); Turkish— Türk dili araşttrmalari yilllği (Belleten) (Ankara, 1953—).

The following journals are devoted to Indo-European linguistics: Zeitschrift für vergleichende Sprachforschung auf dem Gebiete der Indogermanischen Sprachen (Kuhn’s Zeitschrift, abbreviated KZ; Göttingen, 1852—), Beiträge zur Kunde der Indogermanischen Sprachen (Göttingen, 1877—1906), Indogermanische Forschungen (Berlin, 1891—), and Indogermanisches Jahrbuch (Strasbourg, 1913—). Journals on Indo-Iranian linguistics include Zeitschrift für Indologie und Iranistik (Leipzig, 1922—36) and Indo-Iranian Journal (The Hague, 1957—). The journal Glotta (Göttingen, 1907—) deals with classical languages. Romance linguistics are treated in Revue des langues romanes (Montpellier, 1870—), Romanische Forschungen (Frankfurt am Main, 1882—), Revue de linguistique romane (Lyon-Paris, 1925—), Vox romanica (Bern, 1936—), and Studii şi cercetări linguistice (Bucharest, 1950—). Scandinavian linguistics is the subject of Maal og minne (Oslo, 1909—). Journals on Hamito-Semitic languages, particularly the Semitic and Egyptian groups, include Zeitschrift fur ägyptische Sprache und Altertumskunde (Berlin-Leipzig, 1863—), Zeitschrift fur Semitistik und verwandte Gebiete (Leipzig, 1922–35), and Comptes-rendus du Groupe linguistique d’études chamito-sémitiques (Bordeaux-Paris, 1931—). Journals on Uralic linguistics are Suomalaisugrilaisen Seuran aikakauskirja (Helsinki, 1886—), Keleti Szemle (Budapest, 1900–32), Ural-Altaische Jahrbücher (Wiesbaden, 1952—; the journal Ungarische Jahrbücher was published in Berlin, 1921–43), and Etudes Finno-Ougriennes (Paris, 1964—). Journals devoted to African linguistics include Afrika und Übersee (Berlin, 1911—; Zeitschrift fur Kolonialsprachen until 1920; Zeitschrift für Eingeborenen Sprachen, 1920–50), African Language Studies (London, 1960—), Journal of African Languages (London, 1962—), Journal of West African Languages (London, 1964—), and Studies in African Linguistics (Los Angeles, 1970—). The languages of Oceania are the subject of Oceanic Linguistics (Honolulu, 1962—). Journals on Oriental languages include Zeitschrift der Deutschen Morgenländischen Gesellschaft (Leipzig, 1847—), Wiener Zeitschrift fur die Kunde des Morgenlandes (Vienna, 1887—), Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies (London, 1917—), Acta orientalia (Hafniae) (Copenhagen, 1922—), Archiv orientální (Prague, 1929—), Acta orientalia Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae (Budapest, 1950—), and Revue de l’Ecole nationale des langues orientales (Paris, 1964—).

A number of journals are devoted to separate branches of general linguistics. Journals on phonetics and phonology include Le Maître phonétique (London, 1886—), The Quarterly Journal of Speech (New York, 1915—; also includes discussions of problems in stylistics and speech communication), and Phonetica (Basel-New York, 1957—). Journals on lexicology and semantics are Wörter und Sachen (Heidelberg, 1909–44) and Cahiers de lexicologie (Paris, 1959—). Journals dealing with toponymy and anthroponymy are Namn och Bygd (Uppsala, 1913—), Revue internationale d’onomastique (Paris, 1949—), Beiträge zur Namenforschung (Heidelberg, 1949—), and Naamkunde (Louvain, 1969—). Psycholinguistics is the subject of Speech Monographs (New York, 1934—) and Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior (Berkeley-New York, 1962—). The journal Babel (Avignon-Paris, 1955—) deals with translation. A number of journals on mathematical and applied linguistics appeared in the 1950’s and 1960’s: Mechanical Translation (Cambridge, 1954—), Keiryo kokugo gakkai (Tokyo, 1957—), The Linguistic Reporter (Washington, 1959—), Statistical Methods in Linguistics (Stockholm, 1961—), Etudes de linguistique appliquée (Paris, 1962—), Cahiers de linguistique théorique et appliquée (Bucharest, 1962—), and The Prague Bulletin of Mathematical Linguistics (Prague, 1964—).

Bibliographies of linguistic publications are contained in specialized journals: Bibliographie linguistique (Utrecht-Brussels, 1939—), Quarterly Check-list of Linguistics (Darien, 1958—), Bulletin signalétique du C.N.R.S.: 524—Sciences du langage (Paris, 1947—), and Revista de referate şi recenzii: Linguistică, filologie (Bucharest, 1966—). The journal Language and Language Behavior Abstracts (Ann Arbor, 1967—) is a collection of summaries and excerpts from the most important contemporary linguistic works.
