(miscal, mithkal), a unit of weight used in a number of North African and Middle Eastern countries, chiefly for measuring the mass of precious metals and stones, attar of roses, and other valuable substances. The gram equivalent of one miskal varies in different areas: 4.27 g in Algeria, 4.6 g in Afghanistan, 4.68 g in Egypt, 4.64 g in Iran, 4.601 g in Libya, 4.68 g in Sudan, and 4.81 g in Turkey.
