a city in southern Poland, in Nowy Sącz Wójewództwo. Situated on the Dunajec River, in the Carpathians. Population, 22,000 (1971).

Located in the Podhale Depression, on the Kraków-Zakopane highway, the city has a large shoe factory. Nowy Targ was founded in the 13th century. V. I. Lenin was imprisoned in the city from July 26 (Aug. 8) to Aug. 6(19), 1914, after having been arrested by Austrian authorities on a false charge of espionage. Freed with the help of Polish and Austrian Social Democrats, Lenin left for Switzerland in August.
