Lambertus Hersfeldensis

Year of birth unknown; died in the 1080’s. German chronicler.

From 1058 to 1077, Lambertus was a monk at the Hersfeld monastery in Thuringia. During the struggle over investiture, he acted as an ideologist for feudal aristocrats opposed to Emperor Henry IV. He wrote the Annals (from “the creation of the world” to 1077), which, despite their extreme bias, are a valuable source for the political history of Germany (particularly in the 1070’s).
