Lamarck, Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet

Lamarck, Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet

(1744–1829) French naturalist best known for his theory of the inheritance of acquired characters (see LAMARCKISM). Whilst this theory is now generally discredited, Lamarck deserves recognition for popularizing the word ‘biology’ and being effectively the founder of modern invertebrate zoology. He was one of the first true scientists to give real consideration to the evolutionary development of life.
