Musan

 

a city in the northern part of the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea in North Hamgyong Province. Population, about 50,000. Musan is the center of the country’s principal iron ore basin, located along the middle course of the Tumen River between Musan and Hoeryong. Estimated reserves of iron ore are more than 1.3 billion tons, with iron content of about 40 percent. Ore is extracted by opencut mining. A concentration plant is located in Musan. The city and surrounding ore basin are connected by railroad and highway with the metallurgical centers of Chongjin and Kimchaek.
