In 1832, when the Ohio & Erie Canal opened from Cleveland to Portsmouth, Ohio, it became part of acontinuous link from the Atlantic Seaboard to the Gulf of Mexico, via the GreatLakes and the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. By offering a reliabletransportation system for goods and passengers, the Canal helped to bring prosperityto new and existing communities along its route, to fuel westward expansion, and to change the national economicmarkets. Today, the Ohio & Erie Canalway is both a national byway and a nationalheritage area. The corridorincludes a number of local, county, and federal recreation areas that offeropportunities for activities such as hiking and bicycling.
Legth: 110 miles. Start/Endpoint: Byway runs in a north/south direction from Cleveland through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Akron, andMassillon, ending near Dover. In Cleveland the byway includes three forks, each about 10 miles in length. Time to Allow: 4.5 hours. Designation/Year: National Scenic Byway (2000).
