The most common kind is osteogenesis imperfecta tarda, in which the fractures occur when the child begins to walk; it is usually attended by blue coloration of the sclera (Lobstein's disease) and sometimes by otosclerotic deafness (van der Hoeve's syndrome). A less common, usually lethal type is osteogenesis imperfecta congenita, in which deformities occur in utero and the child is born with them. (See Atlas 1, Part B).
