Murphy's sign [mur´fēz] a sign of gallbladder disease consisting of pain on taking a deep breath when the examiner's fingers are on the approximate location of the gallbladder.Murphy's sign Clinical medicine Pain on inspiration when the examiner's fingers are placed under the right costal margin next to the rectus abdominalis, a finding associated with acute cholecystitis.
