Lynn Canal, natural inlet, c.90 mi (145 km) long, 7–12 mi (11–19 km) wide, SE Alaska. It connects in the S with Chatham Strait and Stephens Passage and thrusts north between mountains to break finally into the inlets of the Chilkoot and Chilkat rivers. Navigable to its head, Lynn Canal connects Skagway with Juneau and is an important shipping lane. During the Alaska gold rush (1896) it was a major route to the gold fields.Lynn Canal a fjord-shaped inlet of the Pacific Ocean on the southeastern coast of Alaska. Length, approximately 100 km; width, to 40 km; depth, to 468 m. Its banks are high and steep. The semidiurnal tides are approximately 2 m high.
