Size: 44,978 acres.
Established: Administered under cooperative agreement with Bureau of Reclamation on March 15, 1965. Name changed from Sanford National Recreation Area on October 16, 1972.
Location:On the Texas Panhandle near Fritch, adjoining the Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument (see separate entry for description). Includes multiple access points; visitors from Amarillo may take either TX 136 north or TX 287 north.
Facilities:Campgrounds, picnic area, groceries, off-road vehicle trail, boat ramp, marina, boat rental, museum/exhibit.
Activities:Camping, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, scuba diving, boating, windsurfing, fishing, water-skiing, hunting, off-road vehicle use.
Special Features:A popular water recreation area in the Southwest, 10,000-acre Lake Meredith was created by Sanford Dam on the Canadian River and now fills many breaks whose walls are crowned with white limestone caprock, scenic buttes, pinnacles, and red-brown, wind-eroded coves.
