neurocysticercosis

neurocysticercosis

Involvement of the nervous system with the larvae of the tapeworm Taenia solium . The disease is widespread in the developing world where it is by far the commonest cause of late-onset EPILEPSY and of HYDROCEPHALUS in adults. See also CYSTICERCOSIS. Effective and cheap treatment with the drugs albendazole and praziquantel is available, but reliable diagnosis demands CT scanning or MRI, and these facilities are at a premium in the Third World.
