Established: Established on October 2, 1968.
Location:50 miles uplake from Chelan, Washington. Accessible year-round by passenger ferry or float-plane; there are no road connections between Lake Chelan National Recreation Area and the outside. There are a number of trails available for hiking to the area in the summer.
Facilities:Campgrounds, picnic area, cabin rental, lodging, groceries, restaurant/snacks, boat rental, visitor center, self-guided tour/trail.
Activities:Camping, hiking, horseback riding, mountain climbing, boating, fishing, hunting, cross-country skiing, boat tours.
Special Features:Here the beautiful Stehekin Valley, with a portion of fjordlike Lake Chelan, adjoins the southern unit of North Cascades National Park (see separate entry for description). Lake Chelan rests in a trough carved by glaciers, and with a depth of nearly 1,500 feet, is one of the nation's deepest lakes.
