释义 | Lindsay, JohnLindsay, John (Vliet)(1921– ) mayor, U.S. representative; born in Queens, N.Y. A graduate of Yale University and Yale Law School, he was executive assistant U.S. attorney general (1955–56) and a three-term member of the House of Representatives from New York City's "Silk Stocking" district on the Upper East Side (Rep., 1959–65). A liberal Republican in 1971 during his first term as mayor of New York (1966–74), he changed his affiliation to Democrat, then ran unsuccessfully in the 1972 presidential primaries. He left public life for a law practice. In 1984, he became a presiding partner in the law firm of Webster & Sheffield. He wrote several books including The City (1970). |
