Lindman, Salomon Arvid Achates

Born Sept. 19, 1862, in Uppsala; died Dec. 9, 1936, in Croydon. Swedish statesman and military figure; industrialist; rear admiral (from 1907).

Lindman was deputy to the first chamber of the Riksdag from 1905 to 1911 and to the second chamber from 1912. He was minister of the navy in 1905 and prime minister from 1906 to 1911. In 1907, under the pressure of public opinion, he carried out an electoral reform that increased the number of voters but left substantial limitations on suffrage. Upon Lindman’s initiative, militarization of the country began. He was leader of the Right Party (conservative) from 1912 to 1936. Lindman was chairman of the board of the Swedish Commercial Bank from 1912 to 1923. He became minister of foreign affairs in 1917 and was prime minister in 1928–30.
