mass balance

A mass fitted in front of the hinges of the control surfaces in such a way as to move the center of gravity (CG) of the control to a point forward of the hinge point to prevent flutter at very high speeds. The aim of providing a mass balance is not for the control to be balanced in the sense of a remaining level but to alter the mass distribution of the control to avoid any variation or flutter.
