Meskhi, Sergei Semenovich
Born Oct. 12(24), 1845, in Rioni, present-day Tskhaltubo Raion; died July 21 (Aug. 2), 1883, in Abastumani, present-day Adigeni Raion. Georgian literary critic and public figure.
Meskhi graduated from the faculty of natural sciences at St. Petersburg University in 1867. His social and political views were influenced by the Russian revolutionary democrats. From 1869 to 1881, Meskhi edited the progressive newspaper Droeba (Time), founded by G. Tsereteli in 1866; the newspaper criticized survivals of the patriarchal system of serfholding and condemned social and national oppression. As a literary critic, Meskhi was an adherent of realism.
