La Gravette
La Gravette
a Paleolithic rock-shelter in southwestern France (near Bayac in the Dordogne Department). It was excavated between 1930 and 1954 by the French archaeologist F. Lacorre. Narrow flint knife blades with a blunted edge (called Gravette knife blades, or Gravette points) were found in the upper cultural layers. British archaeologists differentiate the special Gravettian culture, named after the rock-shelter, on the basis of the characteristic implements with blunted edges. The culture was widespread in Europe during the Upper Paleolithic and dates from the 22nd-18th millennia B.C.
