From the late 13th cent. it was the center of the Venetian glass industry, which reached a peak in the 16th cent. and was revived in the 19th cent. by Antonio Salviati. With its old houses, canals, and bridges, Murano has the same quaint charm as Venice. Of note are a Venetian-Byzantine basilica (7th–12th cent.) and a museum of Venetian glass.Muranoa northern suburb of Venice, comprising the island of Murano and other islets in the Venetian lagoon. Population, 7,800 (1965). It has been the site of traditional Venetian glass-making since the 13th century. Plate glass and glass for industrial and laboratory use are produced. A museum devoted to glassblowing is located in Murano. The Romanesque Church of Saints Maria and Donato dates to the 12th century. |
