Established: 1969.
Location:On the bank of the Potomac River 18 miles south of Washington, D.C.
Facilities:Viewing sites, hiking trails.
Activities:Hunting, hiking, fishing, educational programs.
Special Features:Seven bald eagle nests are located in or adjacent to the refuge and there is a wintering population of 50 to 60 birds. The refuge was listed as one of the top ten sites in the country for viewing bald eagles.
Habitats: 2,277 acres of forest and marshlands with 4.4 miles of shoreline.
Access: Public access is limited to trails and an environmental education site.
Wild life: Bald eagles. Also provides habitat for great blue herons, wood thrush, ovenbirds, scarlet tanagers, northern parula warblers, and prothonotary warblers.
