Neue Rheinische Zeitung
Neue Rheinische Zeitung
the press organ of the proletarian wing of the German and European revolutionary-democratic movement, published daily in Cologne from June 1, 1848, to May 19, 1849. The editor in chief was K. Marx, and the editorial board included F. Engels, W. Wolff, G. Weerth, and other members of the Communist League. The newspaper denounced the reactionary feudal and monarchical circles and the forces of the bourgeois counterrevolution and struggled to make the bourgeois-democratic revolution serve the interests of the proletariat and the broad masses. The Neue Rheinische Zeitung advocated the unification of Germany as a democratic republic by revolutionary means and put forward a program of revolutionary change, especially in the agrarian structure. As the mentor and organizer of the masses, the newspaper was the guiding center for their revolutionary actions. It was constantly harassed and persecuted. In May 1849, after Marx’ expulsion from Prussia and reprisals against the other editors, the Neue Rheinische Zeitung ceased publication.
