Population 196,000 (1973). Morioka is a railroad junction. There are cement, textile (knit-wear and nylon apparel), and machine-building industrial enterprises. Computers, mining equipment, and paper goods are also made in Morioka. Household utensils and traditional cast-iron articles, or nambu tetsubin, are handmade in the city. The University of Iwate, established in 1949, and a medical institute set up in 1952 are located in Morioka. The city is also a center for horse breeding. Iron ore is mined in the vicinity. |
