Merritt, LeRoy Charles

Merritt, LeRoy Charles (b. LeRoy Charles Schimmelpfennig)

(1912–70) library educator; born in Milwaukee, Wis. Appointed librarian and associate professor of librarianship at Longwood College in Virginia (1942–46), he was also in charge of library materials at the U.S. Army Special Services Headquarters in Paris, France (1944–45). He moved to the University of California School of Librarianship at Berkeley (1946–66) and then became the first dean of the Library School of the University of Oregon (1966–70). Many of his publications are in the area of book selection, library administration, and intellectual freedom. He was editor of the American Library Association Newsletter on Intellectual Freedom from 1962 until 1970.
