lactose test

lactose test

A test used to detect lactase deficiency.

Method
1.0 g of 2H-lactose/kg of body weight is given by mouth, the release of which depends on release of the 2H from unabsorbed lactose through bacterial metabolism. An increase of breath 2H of greater than 20 ppm above basal levels of 2H indicates lactose malabsorption.
