Minusinsk Uprising

a spontaneous action taken by the peasants of Minusinsk District, Eniseisk Province, against the counterrevolutionary policies of the White Guard “Siberian Government.”

In early November 1918, the peasants routed a punitive detachment in the village of Dubenskoe, and on November 20 they captured the important stanitsa (large cossack village) of Karatuz. On November 20, a 10,000-man force under the leadership of former sergeant major V. Oshchepkov besieged Minusinsk. Toward the end of November, the uprising was suppressed by troops commanded by General I. F. Shil’nikov, and its leaders were executed. The Minusinsk uprising marked the start of the partisan movement in Eniseisk Province.
