Minthuwun

(pseudonym of U Wun). Born 1909, in Kunchankon. Burmese writer.

Minthuwun graduated from the University of Rangoon in 1936 and in the same year went to Great Britain. Since 1939 he has headed the department of translation at the University of Rangoon. He is an expert on the Pali, Mon, and Old Burmese languages. Minthuwun began publishing his work in 1926. He was one of the founders of the khitsan literary movement, and he is the father of modern Burmese poetry for children (Mating Khwe bo kabya, 1939). Taking Burmese life as his principal theme, Minthuwun is one of the best Burmese lyric poets.

Minthuwun is also important as a translator. He has contributed to the compilation of various dictionaries and has written about the history and theory of Burmese poetry. Many of his works have been translated into European languages.
