Its reputation as a center of learning dates from 1796, when a Jesuit seminary was founded there.Olindaa city in northeastern Brazil, in the state of Pernam-buco. Population, 196,500 (1970, including suburbs). The city has a railroad station. Its enterprises include factories for textiles and leather footwear and for the preparation of food products. Founded in the 1530’s, Olinda has architectural monuments dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. |
