Marzuq

(mär`zo͝ok) or

Murzuk

(mo͝or`–), town (1984 pop. 42,294), SW Libya. With Sabha, it is one of the chief settlements of the Fazzan municipality. Marzuq developed around a fort built c.1310 (now in ruins). The town declined with the advent of modern transportation.

(also Murzuk), the largest town in southwestern Libya, in the Marzuq oasis. Population, more than 2, 000. It is the trade and transportation center of the oasis and a junction for caravan routes; the highway to Tripoli passes through the town. Marzuq is a market for agricultural products and handicrafts, including cloth, carpets, and baskets.


Marzuq

 

(also Murzuk), an oasis in southwestern Libya, bounded on the north by the Idehan-Ubari dunes and on the south by the Idehan-Marzuq sand dunes. Most of the oasis’ 10, 000 inhabitants are Berbers. Date palms, wheat, and barley are cultivated, and camels and sheep are raised. Handicrafts include carpet-making and cloth weaving. Soda is extracted.
