Marzenna Day

Saturday or Sunday nearest March 21A festival day along the Vistula River in Poland, Marzenna Day is a spring ritual particularly enjoyed by young people. A Marzenna is a straw doll about three or four feet tall and dressed in rags, a striped shirt, a hat, and lots of ribbons. On this day near the first day of spring ( see Vernal Equinox), the townspeople, dressed in costume, accompany the Marzenna to the river and throw her in. Not only is this act a final farewell to winter, but it also recalls an old legend about a young man whose faith in one god was so great that he was able to save a girl who was about to be sacrificed to appease the gods of storms and floods. After the doll is thrown into the water, the people welcome spring with singing and dancing.
