释义 | Morgan, Edmund SearsMorgan, Edmund Sears,1916–2013, U.S. historian, b. Minneapolis. After receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1942, he taught at the Univ. of Chicago (1945–46) and at Brown (1946–55) before becoming professor of history at Yale (1955–86). An expert on American colonial history, Morgan wrote in a way that is appealing to the general reading public while maintaining high scholarly standards. His many books include The Puritan Family (1944, rev. and enl. ed. 1966), The Stamp Act Crisis, with his wife Helen M. Morgan (1953, rev. ed. 1963), Visible Saints (1963), American Slavery, American Freedom (1975), and biographies of John Winthrop (1958), Ezra Stiles (1962), Roger Williams (1967), and Benjamin Franklin (2002). Morgan's many honors included a Francis Parkman Prize (1976), a Bancroft Prize (1989), and a special Pulitzer Prize citation (2006). |
