Lusitanian Stage

(from the Latin “Lusitania,” the ancient name for Portugal), the Mediterranean type of the upper part of the Oxfordian stage of the Jurassic system. It is not accepted as an independent stage. It was identified in 1885 by the French geologist P. Choffat. The type section of the Lusitanian stage in Portugal contains a stratum of limestones and clays up to 1,500 m thick with interlayers of sandstones and conglomerates.
