Nurata

a city (since Apr. 9, 1976) and the administrative center of Nurata Raion, Samarkand Oblast, Uzbek SSR. Situated in the Aktau Mountains, the city lies 21 km north of the Navoi station, on the Kagan-Khavast railroad line, and 256 km northwest of Samarkand. Population, 13,400 (1973). Carpet-making and marble quarrying are the chief industries.
