With Irving Babbitt he led the New Humanism movement, promoting a neo-Christian philosophy which, he claimed, continued the platonic tradition; his narrow and pedantic views provoked strong reactions from H. L. Mencken and many others. His principal essays on literature and philosophy were collected in The Greek Tradition (4 vols. 1917–27) and Shelburne Essays (11 vols. 1904–21).
