Year of birth unknown; died 1661, Istanbul. Ruler of Moldavia from 1634 to 1653. During Lupu’s rule, the Slavonic-Greek-Latin Academy was opened in Ia§i (1640), as was the first Moldavian press (1641). In 1646, Lupu published the Code, the first printed codex of feudal law in Moldavia; the code officially prohibited the transfer of peasants from one land-owner to another. In 1653, Lupu was overthrown by Georgii Stefan. He died after a long incarceration.
