Ligurian Alps

part of the Maritime Alps in Italy, rimming the Ligurian Sea. They extend for 80 km from Cadibona Pass in the east to the French border and consist of several ranges and massifs with altitudes of 1,300–1,700 m; at the French border elevations reach 2,651 m (Mount Marguareis). They are composed primarily of limestones and schists and descend sharply to the Ligurian Sea. At the foot of the Ligurian Alps is the western part of the Italian Riviera with Mediterranean landscapes. Oak, chestnut, beech, and pine forests are found at elevations above 300–500 m.
