On central northern border of OR; organized Dec 22, 1854 (prior to statehood) from Clackamas and Washington counties. The smallest county in OR by size and largest by population. Name Origin: For the Multnomah Indian village on Sauvie Island; Lewis and Clark applied the name to all local Indians. From nemathlonamaq, probably meaning 'downriver.'
