Martin's visionary and grandiose landscapes, the pictorial counterparts of English romantic poetry, won him international popularity. He is also known for his illustrations for the Bible and Milton's Paradise Lost (1827).Martin, John(1893–1985) dance critic, author; born in Louisville, Ky. Appointed as the first dance critic for the New York Times in 1927, Martin championed nontraditional dance in his reviews and essays until his retirement in 1962. He wrote several dance books including the classic, The Modern Dance. |
