Labid Ibn Rabia

Born circa 560; died in 661. Arab poet.

Labid ibn Rabia belonged to the al -muhadramun generation (pre-Islamic poets who adopted Islam). He was a descendant of the Amir nomadic tribe. Labid ibn Rabia wrote approximately 50 poems either extolling his own and his tribe’s valor or describing the desert. Many of them are muallaqs—the best pre-Islamic qasidas—distinguished by their simple and precise language.
