Web: www.nps.gov/natr/ Description:The Alabama segment of the Natchez Trace Parkway is the middle leg of a byway that covers the entire length of the 444-mile Natchez Trace, which encompassesportions of Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi. Native Americans,Kaintuck boatmen, indians, post riders, soldiers and fortune seekersall travelled across this trail, charting newterritory and creating a vital link between the Mississippi Territoryand the United States. The Alabama section of the byway offers a wealth of early pioneer and Native American history, including nearby access to the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, which tells the story of how more than 16,000 CherokeeIndians were forced to leave their homeland.
Legth: 32 miles (Alabama section); 444 miles (entire parkway). Start/Endpoint: Parkway runs from Nashville, TN to Natchez, MS. The Alabama section cuts through the northwest corner of the state and is accessible from Highways 20 and 14, and also from Highway 72 going west. Designation/Year: All-American Road (1996).
