Moran, Thomas

(1837–1924) painter; born in Bolton, Lancashire, England. He emigrated to Philadelphia, which became his home (1844), and was apprenticed to an engraver. After revisiting England (1862), he returned to America and traveled with various expeditions to the Western states. His spectacular panoramic paintings, such as the famous Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone (1893–1901), brought him critical acclaim.
