Population, 32,500 (1965). More than half of the labor force is employed in the service industries. Beer, canned fruits, wine, chemicals, and ceramics are produced in Merano. A hydroelectric power plant is located near the city. Merano is a climatic and balneological resort located in the foothills of the Alps. The climate is marine, with a mild, sunny winter (average January temperature, 0°-2°C) and a warm summer (average July temperature, 21°C). The chief therapeutic means is the cold radioative springs (13°C; Mach number, 150-250), the water of which is used for drinking, baths, inhalation therapy, and showers. Climatotherapy and grape therapy are also prescribed. Merano offers treatment for diseases of the respiratory organs, the gastrointestinal tract, and joints; metabolic disorders; and gynecological and skin diseases. It has balneotherapy and physical therapy clinics, boardinghouses, and hotels. |
