O’Donovan Rossa, Jeremiah

 

Born Sept. 10, 1831, in Rosscarbery, County Cork; died June 26, 1915, in New York. A member of the Irish national liberation movement.

O’Donovan Rossa was one of the founders in 1856 of the Phoenix Society, a secret revolutionary group. He played a prominent role in the Fenian Brotherhood and was associated with the Fenian organ, the Irish People. In the fall of 1865 he was arrested and sentenced to hard labor for life. Amnestied in 1870, O’Donovan Rossa emigrated to the USA and was active there in local Fenian organizations. Later he withdrew from revolutionary activity.
