Mopti

(môp`tē), city (1993 pop. 75,000), central Mali, a port at the confluence of the Niger and Bani rivers. The city is built on three islets linked by dikes; one dike, 8 mi (12.9 km) long, connects the islets with the river bank. Mopti is the market center for a region where rice, cotton, peanuts, and cassava are produced and cattle are raised.

Located on the right bank of the Bani River at the confluence of the Bani and Niger rivers, on three islands connected by barrages. Mopti is Mali’s largest fishing port and is an important center for the fish trade. A fish cannery and a fruit drinks enterprise are located there.
