Network Information Center

(NIC) A body that provides information, assistance andservices to network users. These will typically includetelephone and electronic mail "help desk" type services forusers and network information services such as hostnames andaddresses which are accessed automatically by computers usingsome client-server protocol (usually Sun's NIS).
