Marshall, John Hubert

 

Born Mar. 19, 1876, in Chester; died Aug. 17, 1958, in Guildford, Surrey. British archaeologist and historian.

From 1902 to 1931, Marshall was director general of India’s Archaeological Survey. Between 1913 and 1926 he directed the excavations at Taxila, and between 1922 and 1926 at Mohenjodaro. Together with A. Foucher, Marshall investigated the ancient Buddhist remains in Sanchi and published works on the subject. He was the author of studies on ancient Hindu archaeology, history, and art.
