Marshall, Barry James,

1951–, Australian physician, grad. Univ. of Western Australia (M.B., B.S., 1974). Marshall he was on the staff at the Royal Perth Hospital from 1977 to 1986 and on the faculty at the Univ. of Virginia from 1986 to 1996.  received the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 2005 for discovering that a bacterium causes inflammation and ulceration of the stomach. Working with Warren, who had discovered Helicobacter pylori in the lower stomach lining, Marshall conducted a study of biopsies of 100 patients and demonstrated that this bacterium was the cause of peptic ulcer disease. The discovery that this disorder was caused by infection led to its treatment using antibiotics.
